The 12 year old hustler who understands and exchanges bodily autonomy/agency for materiality. The gecko named "dinero". The mother's No-Doze habit. This Almodovar is an explicit deconstruction and indictment of capitalism--its images still etched into my mind almost 10 years after I first viewed it.
You are probably thinking "Almodovar makes a kitchen-sink film, what could possibly go wrong," and you are right, nothing does! Chus, in her second film for Pedro, fosters a lizard named "Dinero," undergoes Volver's return-to-the-country drama while Carmen pushes into a boisterous cynicism. Camp in the everyday feels refreshing and, most of all, true.
The hilarious adventures of a cleaning lady among drug addicts, dealers, thieves, alcoholics, prostitutes, pedophiles. The world according to ALMODOVAR, a colorful & happy world, life in fact!
Some of the things Almodóvar depicts jokingly and in such light manner could not possibly be taken so lightly today in any media. It is refreshing to watch such film, and with such humour, this film is liberating us from taking every issue so damn seriously.
