Keeps you nailed to your seat. Good story - for Nina and Leyla you hope this atrocity does not really happen to any young woman but you know it does. The plot's a bit confused with the three stories going parallel, but its's gripping and fast paced, and satisfies your need for final justice.
'Faşizm, atılan ilk bombalarla başlamaz, her gazetede üzerine bir şeyler yazılabilecek olan terörle de başlamaz. Faşizm, insanlar arasındaki ilişkilerde başlar, iki insan arasındaki ilişkide...' Ingeborg Bachmann
När Mörkret Faller (When Darkness Falls) is an extremely solid Swedish thriller. It is a strong and intense film about violence (in three storylines). Rightly awarded with the Amnesty International Film Prize in 2007. The storylines are intelligent and compelling and the film is at times very exciting. Visually, there is not a whole lot to do, but everything is expertly enough brought to the screen.
So good to see a film that doesn't only depict violence, but also what happens next, the fight against it. Three heavy story lines with an uplifting conclusion, not an easy feat but I feel they've done well. Strong portraits of the complex relationship between honour and violence, and what it means to be a bystander.
The three stories, only superficially intertwined, have in common a single theme: the violence in the contemporary age. Not particularly elegant direction, but not horrible either. The timing of the stories are a bit 'messy: it seems that the director, sometimes, forget a story. Well characterized characters.
