absolutely stunning. one of the best horror films I've seen in a while. Sole really turns you in many directions, even up the last shot. I'm not exactly sure what to make of the ending (which bothers the hell out of me) but I still really love everything about this movie. I must admit I am still freaked out a bit. I totally recommend this to all horror fanatics
What a great horror film! Sole strikes the right balance between an unbalanced psyche of Catholic believers and the emotionally vacant social surrounding. The latter is depicted in art direction (the page 3 girls, the film posters, the religious icons) that would make contemporary auterism envious while some of the shots have a formal materialist quality that stresses enclosure and eclipse without being stylized.
No good mom, no good auntie, no good daughter, no good sister, no good dad, no good cop, no good priest & no good church for a no good slasher. And a pretty unsane anticlerical pamphlet. Reference to PSYCHO (at 1h 26min 36sec). The 2 stars go to naughty Brooke SHIELDS and fatso Alphonso DE NOBLE.
One of the best unsung horror films of the 70's. Taking the well-worn organized religion context to an unnerving extreme, it makes faith-based beliefs the motivator for the evil deeds and omnipresent judge of its characters. Subversive in its religious-attack literacy, effectively morbid, and taboo breaking, only the sometimes overplayed drama hurts it minimally. Ace, especially for the often-wretched slasher genre.
An American take on the giallo genre that finds an unstable little girl being the main suspect in murders and carnage. Plotting is contrived and even silly at moments but overall film is quite watchable even if its to watch which actor chews the scenery the most. Any film whose first murder takes place in a church during a communion service can't be all bad.
Blasphemy and perversity, what beautiful things to throw into a child who murders movie! Add psychology and emotional complexity and you have a movie that shines through its faults! Hell, even its faults are just sheer sugar to me.
