All Is Lost is as rigorously sustained and bountifully cinematic as any recent American movie… Considering Margin Call, one might be tempted to assign a self-lacerating liberal message to All Is Lost, as our man in the east is conspicuously Caucasian, and clearly completely out of his element. Yet for all its gestures towards the political, the film functions best as a pummelling adventure; it’s even less mythic than practical, moreDaniel Defoe than Ernest Hemingway.

In this lo-fi waterworld, all instruments needed to have been tuned and Redford is a bum note. Great moments exist, like when Our Man gets to deliver one perfect word while an ambiguous ending throws everything into interesting relief. It would be unfair to say all is lost in these parts but the motor gives before the 105 minutes have dripped past.

Of all the recent extreme-survival narratives in American cinema… All Is Lost has the most powerful sense of inexorability. It also happens to be the most accomplished piece of filmmaking on that list by a nautical mile… Offering up the grim spectacle of an icon being broken down piece by piece, All Is Lost collapses the gulf between audience and movie star more effectively and affectingly than any film I can remember.

Was sagen Andere darüber?

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film All Is Lost

Represents a tremendous leap forward for writer/director J.C. Chandor, as I found myself more engaged during the opening ten minutes of "All is Lost" than any moment in his debut film "Margin Call." Robert Redford operates with the relaxed presence of a screen icon. Never underestimate the entertainment value of watching a competent and resourceful individual try to make their way out of a pressure cooker situation.

  • Trevor Tillman's rating of the film All Is Lost

A testament to the over-reliance on words in contemporary cinema. Its purist approach mesmerizes, and serves as a technical showcase, moving us under, over, and through every confine of the boat. The form is appropriate—what unfolds appeals to an innate, primal curiosity at seeing someone endure ever decreasing odds of survival with hyper-competence. Especially when it's Robert Redford.

  • Thomas's rating of the film All Is Lost

Tense and engrossing. I'd expected this to be another 'Redford vanity vehicle', but was happy to be proved wrong by Chandor's masterful visual storytelling of a potentially difficult predicament to film entertainingly. An accomplished film from a very accomplished director.

  • Mugino's rating of the film All Is Lost

Compelling, but often for the wrong reasons. Certain genres are cheats because they steal the inherent suspense and drama of the formula and masquerade it as the product of writing or direction. Of course we want the man to survive, but does that make a film great? "Into the Wild" ventured into a similar solitude and desperation with greater heartbreak and without copping out.

  • Zac Weber's rating of the film All Is Lost

All is Lost is a failed experiment grasping for profundity. I respect what Chandor is attempting, but the accumulative effect is rather boring. If we are supposed to appreciate the film as a character study, I would have been more interested watching a lesser-known actor.

  • David Grillo's rating of the film All Is Lost

A film almost entirely about a man and his relationship with himself the meditation of preparation and will. Redford's eyes always speak volumes but in this film it was his hands that fill in that void of solitude everything is calm even if your not.

  • Tigrão's rating of the film All Is Lost

Having spent half my life on a boat like this one (and sometimes in some pretty hot situations - nothing compared to this though) I can only salute the bravada of making such a film. Everything at sea is difficult to do, from fixing a sail to taking a leak, and the attention to detail in this movie is spot on. It's a brilliantly acted story of survival. All is Lost is to navigation what 127 Hours was to hiking.

  • Mathieu Verbeeck's rating of the film All Is Lost

Murphy's law at sea ... I applaud J.C Chandor for this quasi-silent movie which throws you straight into the action. With one lonely sailer as the film's only cast member - probably the shortest end credit ever. Highly recommended!
