Andrej Rubljow Regie Andrei Tarkovsky
It clocks its 186 minutes without anybody ever picking up a brush, but Tarkovsky fills the gap with a sinuous directing and majestic mise en scène that add to it a virtuosic painting-like quality.

A mesmerizing portrait of an artist and cleric undone by a world that is cruel, chaotic, unexplainable.

Everyone would argue that it’s always best to watch a director’s entire filmography chronologically (with the exception of Semih Kaplanoglou’s trilogy, which includes Bal), I found that my watching Tarkovsky’s oeuvre almost the other way around added a magnificent ghostly atmosphere to Rublev.

Was sagen Andere darüber?

  • El Biffo's rating of the film Andrej Rubljow

The last Tarkovsky that I hadn't seen (after watching Stalker at least 20X), and I won't watch it again. This is my least favorite of his films. Obviously the work of a great master, it was nonetheless very, very unpleasant for me to watch. I know that it is my personal prejudice to find scenes of gruesome, graphic violence incredibly unpleasant (seen enough irl), so I'm only subtracting 1 star for that reason.

  • Jason's rating of the film Andrej Rubljow

When I first saw ANREI RUBLEV as a teenager in the 90s I can confess to having been quite categorically transported by it. It seemed to have arrived from another realm and precipitated a spiritual experience born of a kind of profound defamiliarization. I experience it differently as a man nearly forty. It strikes me now as a sublime testament to creative industry and something nearer a documentary on its own making.

  • dionysus67's rating of the film Andrej Rubljow

Hagiographical cinema has rarely surpassed this major work of art. The 15th century episodic structure of Rublev's ascent to his Christian mission is told in unprecedented stylistic bravura and pacing that can only honor the ontological backdrop of the story, the character and the filmmaker himself. Perfectly tuned in content to the asceticism of Byzantine art, the film's form touches the divine with its fingertips.

  • ASHES IN THE HOURGLASS's rating of the film Andrej Rubljow

Tarkovsky is overrated, but my second viewing has more than proven this epic's beauty. So how should I praise this masterpiece by a director who I often find to be too self-centered? Simple, by quoting a japanese anime about gore and tits. Take it away BERSERK: Love, hate, ultimate pleasure, ultimate pain, life and death, all here to enjoy before our very eyes, the true nature of man and the devil is here and now.

  • Lintang A.'s rating of the film Andrej Rubljow

The movie is not about one talented monk, but about Russia, and Rublev stands in as a useful symbol since he lived in a time when he could personally witness two of the key elements in the development of Russia's unique culture. Deserved for 10/10.

  • HSBilly's rating of the film Andrej Rubljow

this is why i love tarkovsky, he made the story not just some biopic of historical figure, but he show us andrei rublev's passion for his later masterpiece. this is not the life and death of andrei rublev, this is the life of rublev's creation.

  • Spiritchaser's rating of the film Andrej Rubljow

Andrei Rublev is the closest film that i can safely call 'art'. It's Tarkovsky's magnum opus. I always demand that cinema shows us new things. For 3 hours, i was entranced, living in a totally different world. Cinema needs more films depicting the past.

  • joey Noodles's rating of the film Andrej Rubljow

I have been very very critical of Tarkovsky in the past, but this film is really something. It takes away all of the pretension in his later works (not all of them, but some) and creates a beautiful, poetic, haunting and powerful view on humanity and it's unrelenting shittiness. A stunning masterwork, 5/5
