Kritiker-Rezensionen

Though screening here as part of MoMA’s extremely welcome series on Ann Sheridan (who’s terrific as a childhood acquaintance of the two men), it’s Cagney who runs away with the picture. With his chewy voice, his signature opening line (“Whadda ya hear? Whadda ya say?”), and his live-wire physical energy (the basketball sequence is a marvel of slapstick), he turns Rocky’s character into a thug whose Code-prescribed condemnation is nevertheless fully felt.
