ASCHE IST REINES WEISS

Jia Zhangke China, 2018
If this is a genre story in some ways, just as Long Day’s Journey into Night is, it’s a more tragic one, with bitter, unromantic repercussions. There is fatalism and then there is stoicism.

The gun-toting heroine of Zhao’s action moment is just one fleeting persona: beyond it is a core of tenacity and integrity strengthened and purified, ash-like, in the white-hot crucible of solitude and adversity.

The two leads (but especially Zhao, who's incredible throughout) manage these physical changes expertly, making sure not to let them overwhelm the headstrong confidence that defined their characters at the start of the film.

Far from being a mere symbol of feminine vulnerability, Zhao emerges as no less than the film’s coauthor, with her performance bringing grit to an action-melodrama hybrid that might otherwise register as a bid to endear China’s greatest art-house auteur to a wider commercial audience.

Ash is Purest White is plugged into the traditions of Hong Kong pop cinema not through a mere desire for hat-tip homage, but through a deep understanding how folklore and poplore color how people think about and envisage their lives.

The movie represents both the director and his lead actress at the peak of their powers.

Jia’s perspective is neither nostalgic nor optimistic. His movies don’t imagine a stable past to be mourned or longed for. . . . Nor do they project a happy future on the horizon. His world is in constant motion, and his refusal to hurry through it.

Despite its sprawling two-decade timeline and big budget, Ash Is Purest White is far more than a greatest hits compilation for Jia as he t hankfully returns to his strengths after the transcontinental excess of Mountains May Depart.

Ash Is the Purest White is laced with peculiar and striking moments, from melancholic ballroom dancing and wedding crashing to the aforementioned UFO sighting, but it’s the period of time over which Bin and Qiao’s relationship takes place that provides the true emotional core of the film.

As always with Jia, the local color is extraordinary and so are the performances. China changes, but Zhao’s character, tough and sardonic, remains loyal to her code.

Jia fuses these familiar settings, elements, and themes into something new within his oeuvre, namely his most humane and empathetic film.

Personally, I like Ash Is Purest White more than either of these other estimable “late” works, and not only because it so deliberately evokes aspects of Jia’s early 21st-century ascent. It’s more to do with the move from an ensemble approach—which flattens out and essentializes characters, rendering them components of a larger machine— to something so yoked to individual psychology.
