When it comes to the crunch, Nichols always opts for an old-fashioned psychological realism. He cannot bear to view his characters solely as types or figures; he is too enamoured of the superb work of his actors to ever give up those moments of emotional truth when the words dry up and the tears flow.

Was sagen Andere darüber?

  • Zachary T.'s rating of the film Hautnah

"You ever seen a human heart?! It looks like a fist wrapped in blood!" Critics hemmed and hawed over the translation from stage to screen, but performances this brave and devastating are merit enough, I think. The exacting cruelty (and honesty) of Marber's dialogue is also without peer, across mediums.

To this day, Closer remains one of my all time favorite films. The way it portrays love, sex, lust, betrayal, insecurity, essentially everything that makes the world go round, is wonderfully rooted in reality. Love can be simple and absolutely magical but also complex and excruciatingly painful. Masterful direction, unforgettable dialogue, great performances and a mesmerizing song by Damien Rice.

CLOSER is one of the unusual romance movie I've ever seen. I'm not sure whether it's a romance. I guess a "love story" would be proper. I think CLOSER try to explain that love's a very complicated thing and what's the definition of love itself. All four main actors/actresses did an amazing job. But Natalie Portman's character succeed to steal my attention. Her characterization is really complex. Good job Mr. Nichols!

  • Mique Miq's rating of the film Hautnah

I could watch it for so many times. There is always something reconforting in the simple, but forward way this movie points out the chaotic undergrounds of some interpersonal relationships. Thank you, my real name is Jane.

  • Jye Sherwell's rating of the film Hautnah

This film has a brutal honesty to it, that's almost difficult to confront, just as in real life the truth can be hard to confront. It's astonishing actually. Such a rare thing to have in films, at least in this way. Portman is very good in this, the visuals and direction are also good. One of those films where you feel as though you've actually experienced something, instead of it just being another film.

  • anarresti's rating of the film Hautnah

The best reflection in the last decade that I have seen in cinema about the destructive power of jealousy (I'm not sure that Eyes wide Shut is at all about jealousy). Instead of a love triangle we have a jealousy square. Four characters fall in love, break up, learn how to use the power of memory, how broken fragments inside hurt. Can you forgive yourself for not forgiving? Can you love the present, live in the Now?

  • J. O.'s rating of the film Hautnah

Between the razor-sharp banter and the layers of betrayal, "Closer" is an emotional flogging. But with that being said, it is deeply touching and true to the complex nature of human relationships. Forgiveness, Larry says, is what separates humanity from animals. But is this true, or is forgiveness an illusion created by humanity to elevate themselves above animals? Apparently, lying is the world's currency.
