This is a true gem of Australian cinema. This film has it all, a great soundtrack, exciting action at every turn, thought provoking social commentary, and a decent amount of tits and ass. The Australians perfected the art of making arthouse action films. In its 90 minute running time, it never lets up.
Trenchard-Smith himself frames DEAD-END DRIVE-IN as a mixture of MAD MAX and THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL, which is a pretty compelling recipe for what is nominally a lowdown genre concoction. It ends up being a disarmingly brilliant movie about social control and societal breakdown, but one pitched as boisterous comedy w/ deranged set-pieces and high-octane mayhem. The neon candy production design is crazy and fabulous.
