Die Nibelungen: Kriemhilds Rache Regie Fritz Lang

A work of bottomless intensity and influence — the nobility of Alexander Nevsky and the decay of Ivan the Terrible, Visconti’s Night of the Long Knives (The Damned) and Boorman’s gore-splattered armors (Excalibur), they all flow from here. That Lang would three decades later reincarnate his medieval heroine as an American moll with a half-burned visage speaks volumes about his belief in the continuum of humanity’s blood fables.

Everywhere in Lang is a picture-box image of crosshatched lines, meshed teeth, or foregrounds imposing and imprisoning backgrounds—or vice versa. In Die Nibelungen, the frames are filled with UFA’s most lavish set construction and wardrobe design, to a degree of splendor that rivals Eisenstein’s Ivan the Terrible series.

In these conditions I greatly preferred the shabby, plot-hole ridden picture of 1944 [Ministry of Fear], its baffled, murky and oppressive paranoia and its the disjointed aura of feeling exiled in one’s own country to the portentous, “meaningful”-masterful totemic super film of 1924 [Die Nibelungen].
