Der Geschmack von grünem Tee über Reis Regie Yasujirô Ozu

Much of our laughter in The Flavor of Green Tea over Rice is elicited by Ozu’s visual gags and playful framing.

In the U.S., it isn’t revived as often as most other films from Ozu’s long run of postwar masterpieces, but that’s not to say it’s a minor work. It features some of the most remarkable tonal shifts in Ozu’s filmography, moving so gracefully from comedy to psychodrama to melodrama that one doesn’t recognize the changes as such. It also contains some of the director’s most dynamic black-and-white images, which play on and with modernist interior design to fabulous, spatially complicated effect.

The film rakes smug Japanese bourgeois in the postwar era over the coals, but of course leavens the meal with ambivalence and understanding and gray regions of doubt, all of which somehow turns social critique into something pre-modern, and primordial. The ending reaches an awkward state of happy/sad we may feel within our rights to disbelieve, but the master’s steady gaze alone can absolve us from cynicism.
