2013 | 2 Nominiert unter anderem: Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role

The enormous gulf of difference between what we generically expect from a mainstream Oscar-season release and what Flight actually offers accounts for much of the film’s initial blast of energy. To the credit of Zemeckis, screenwriter John Gatins, and lead actor Denzel Washington, there’s also a convincing trace of dark comedy… that, especially at the outset, seems awfully provocative considering the high-stakes conflict of the first-act material…

I think Zemeckis’s selective brusqueness makes Whip’s story that much more traumatizing: the door to the next-door hotel room wafts open gracelessly, and Whip’s grasping hand also closes with a bump. Flight is moving because it is essentially ambiguous, save for the happy ending Whip earns for himself. There’s typically a considerable amount of weight to characters’ actions, because there’s almost always a catch.

God is used here the way Nicole uses the needle that accidentally falls out of her purse: the heroin is a shield against the mind digging deeper into the disturbing mess that either personal choices or “conditions on the ground” have made of us.

Was sagen Andere darüber?

  • chanandre's rating of the film Flight

It's hands down my all-time favourite Zemeckis and that's saying a lot, since I don't really dig the man. That alone is mentionable. Denzel is seriously amazing. Haven't seen him this good in a long time. The plane crashing sequence is one for the ages, really amazing. I loved the way he cut that last shot. Very dry. Spielberg would have milked it, but the second i felt tears forming he cut to ending credits.great!

  • Filipe F. Coutinho's rating of the film Flight

An old-school character-drama, shot in an old-school way, featuring an old-school performance. This is to say that Flight is compelling, skillfully directed and superbly acted. Whip Whitaker is greatly written and by far Denzel's meatiest role since Alonzo Harris. Zemeckis drenches the picture in melancholia and inevitable doom and Denzel just runs with it. It's a tough watch, but it should've gone further and deeper

I actually cried at the end of this but I'm a sucker for that sort of emotional epiphany. On the whole is a pretty weak film with odd and often unsuccessful choices. I think this would have played better if the event were out of sequence and we gradually came to understand the truth. Who knows. Outstanding performance from Washington but hardly unexpected. Still glad to see Zemeckis returning from the dark side.

  • Harry Rossi's rating of the film Flight

The first 30 minutes was AMAZING. The crash sequence had me on the edge of my seat. Unfortunately the next fucking 2 hours could barely hold my attention. What should have been a moral reflection on Denzel's drunken state vs. the fact that he performed an amazing landing and what we should think of him become just your standard alcoholism movie. I honestly wasn't even that impressed with his performance. Lame.

  • LoverofLeCinema's rating of the film Flight

A character study in the highest tier. Perfect it is not, but it rejects so many traps and takes much rougher, upsetting routes. Not a courtroom thriller, but one man's depressing battle with himself. Deeply affecting. One of my favorite movies of the year, and possibly my favorite performance by the great Denzel Washington.

  • Matthew_Lucas's rating of the film Flight

Robert Zemeckis returns to live action filmmaking after more than a decade with this surprisingly sensitive portrayal of alcoholism about an airline pilot whose heroic landing of a damaged plane comes under scrutiny when it was revealed that he was drunk at the time of the incident. Some tonally odd moments, but Denzel Washington is fantastic, and the film is a strong, maturely directed triumph for Zemeckis.

  • Dave's rating of the film Flight

An outstanding character study executed perfectly by Denzel. The flight crash sequence is as fine and suspenseful an action sequence as has been filmed in a long while.

The crash, the Sartrean "No Exit" stairwell scene stolen by James Badge Dale's unforgettable five minutes as a smoking cancer patient, and that single minute at the minibar.
