DIE VIERERBANDE

Jacques Rivette Frankreich, 1989
Contrary to something like method acting, of a performer digging entirely into the lived reality of a character, The Gang of Four sees the art as reliant on the personal lives and hang-ups that an actor might subconsciously bring to a part, allowing something that exists only on a page to come alive in ways that even the original writer could not predict.

Rivette has tendencies similar to David Lynch in that he bends realism with supernatural elements through gesture. In the case of Gang of Four, and many of Rivette’s films, it is through a conspiracy theory, and Champetier emphasizes this with sensual, moody lensing and propensity for a color palette drenched in reds, amber, gold, and musty browns, giving off a foreshadowing feeling that a violent act will occur.

After Gang finished, I was left with a sense that it was all a little practiced—less joyous than Va savoir, less risky than Duelle or Noroît, less mystical and lush than The Story of Marie and Julien, less commanding than L'Amour fou and Out 1: Spectre. After seeing the earlier Love on the Ground a few days later, I felt compelled by a bit of Rivette-esque frenzy... They seemed to riff off each other cleanly and easily.

The House Next Door
Working from the outside in, Rivette and his actresses transform these vacant shells of people into tragically flesh-and-blood human beings. If we respond to their contrived camaraderie (as any cinemagoer is wont to do), our reactions are nonetheless tempered and kept in check by the very fact of the characters' humanity, which is revealed slowly and disturbingly, layer by layer.

The film intentionally creates more mystery than it can account for, leaving a buzzing sensation of forces outside of our understanding, operating in modes beyond our comprehension. Rivette's films are directly related, in this aspect, to an American literature of paranoia, best exemplified by Thomas Pynchon and Don DeLillo, where conspiracy is so pervasive that it is essentially invisible.

It represents the first case of outright repetition in Rivette's career, and suggests that after three decades he has finally worked his way back to a more "classical" or conventional style of direction... He's obviously gained a great deal of mastery as a director in the meantime, but lost some spirit of adventure. The Gang of Four, one of his most accessible movies, can be an excellent introduction to his work as a whole; but it's less impressive if you already know that work.

Rivette's most engaging and accessible film in over a decade... Not the least of the film's delights is the impressive roster of fresh talent (Berandette Giraud, Ines D'Almeida, Fejria Deliba, Nathalie Richard), all excellent and most in their first important roles. Veteran Ogier is superb: her performance during the rehearsal scenes is a marvel of timing, controlled interiority, and sheer craft. Isabelle Adjani might well profit from one of her courses.

''The Gang of Four'' (''La Bande des Quatre''), offers an accessible and entertaining vision of how the New Wave has survived and evolved long after it was declared dead... Mr. Rivette is not looking for neat analogies between fiction and reality. ''The Gang of Four..." is itself a fictional world, enticing to certain tastes.
