Over and over I’ve seen white folks who otherwise hold all sorts of interesting opinions about black folks call Green Book a “feel good” movie. Yes. Sure. You feel good. About yourself. Without having done anything. Without having gained, or try to gain, any knowledge of black culture.

As a movie about one blue-collar Italian-American’s peculiar relationship to both food and the concept of whiteness, Green Book has something to recommend it. As a portrait of a black homosexual artist’s alienation from the culture of his youth, it is a considerably dicier proposition.

The film provides a service in the same way The Help did: it makes a certain audience feel better about historical injustice while annoying pretty much everyone else.

Was sagen Andere darüber?

  • chanandre's rating of the film Green Book

[UCI El Corte] One of the funniest and sweetest films i have watched all year (Yo Chase, yo Scorsese put my man Viggo on your films ASAP he is a funny guyyy!!!) "Orphans for Orpheus, Joe pan in lieu of Chopin" - malapropisms galore. I loved that line where Don says 'i'm not black, i'm not white, am not a man, what am i?' Both deserve Oscars. The right way to defuse racism: stay dignified, work within you & be kind.

  • Michael H. CLAES's rating of the film Green Book

CONSENSUAL film that, like other American productions (Three Billboards outside Ebbing), does not avoid CLICHES. AWESOME original sixties SOUNTRACK ! === Film consensuel qui, comme d'autres productions américaines, n'évite pas les clichés. Bande son originale des sixties géniale !

  • saitosouta's rating of the film Green Book

Albeit its awful reputation, "Green Book" is not so bad as the amalgam of delightful laugh and deep pathos in Farrelly style. But the real things I want from Farrellys are moralilty-breaking gags and maddeningly dirty shit which make me laugh out loud like a broken furby. Are they gone with little brother Bobby? Compared with such laughable works, "Green Book" is just a feel-good film diluted and lukewarm sadly.

  • Andhika Eka Buana's rating of the film Green Book

Expecting the worst from GREEN BOOK due to its backlash in recent weeks, but turns out it were all just that -backlash. Completely charming from start to finish. Mortensen combined his nasty EASTERN PROMISE side with his CAPTAIN FANTASTIC supressed warmth seamlessly (& surprise: now all 3 got him Oscar noms!).

  • Jérémy Poirier's rating of the film Green Book

A beautiful, funny and heartfelt little film. Its charm is mainly due to the palpable chemistry between Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali. They both play their role really well even though I'm unsure Mortensen was the right choice to play an italian character. The story narrative and character arcs are well written and pays off in both a predictable and a really satisfying way. Loved the humor. 3.5 stars.

  • Huey McEvoy's rating of the film Green Book

A film so staggeringly unoriginal and predictable that often I found my jaw wide open in disbelief. Mortensen's wiseguy act is a little hard to swallow, but Ali's performance has enough grace notes to hold it together. They don't make films like this anymore - and that's a good thing.

  • Duncan Gray's rating of the film Green Book

What's weirder? Oscar season showing love to a Farrelly, or auteurists rallying around a movie that could've been pitched as "The Help 2"? Either way, it's more than you expect. It's a fascinating play of stereotypes—Viggo gets to glory in being one, while Ali's character feels great weight to defy them—and most of all, it's warm. Which is exactly why historical kitsch needs a comedy director to make it humanistic.

  • Ethan's rating of the film Green Book

Viggo Mortensen and Marshala Ali give exceptional performances in this heartwarming and funny film that shows us that we may be different but we're all humans and we should treat each other as such. A feel good film that has a lot of heart.
