I will watch like a crazy viewer. Arrabal's amazing assemble goes deep into culture and its engines: what is sense when culture is a mix of make belive? Introducing grotesque/delightful scenes (it only depends on how far you want to go on your poetics), this film is all about mental symbols and (de)constructing life itself - it shows love, fear, death and time on poetic dimensions. Very, very beautiful.
Its a half baked intent on trying to achieve what Jodorowsky was able to spew in a natural less-forced way. Seems Arrabal did not learn much in working with Jodorowsky previously. A french psychoanalytical follow up to El Topo... sort of.
The film gets weaker when it steps away from Arrabal's life experience, as it's unable to build a solid sociological analysis ("civilized" man/society vs. uncivilized man/society still in communion with Nature is an old cliche, hard to renew and easy to dumb down). Also we got it, you hate your mother lol. Pasolini did better in Medea (1969)
Masterful surrealism, often grotesque, sometimes beautiful, always abrasive....Arrabal situates two men, one wild and mystic, the other "civilized" and modern, together as quick friends, to show, not always subtly, the beauty of "backwards" people, and the gross hypocrisies of modern life..."like shadows in a torn fog, i will walk like a crazy horse"....
