The presence of Seyrig is only one way this film echoes Last Year at Marienbad. Both films use a tightly-controlled yet expressive mise en scene; in transferring the milieu from monied opulence to drab domestic drudgery, Akerman wants to show the true social conditions leading to the deadening of human feeling. As a result, the final rupture of control into violence is much more persuasive. Radical and unsettling.
