The beautifully shot traditional Noh scenes juxtaposed with the flatly filmed 70s softcore stuff is quite striking. Shindo's past meets his present. However, I get the feeling Shindo is merely dressing up a titflick with surrealist arthouse leanings. The most impressive thing about this film is how far Shindo pushes the Japanese censorship laws. He deserves a best foreign language Oscar for inventive blocking alone.
