Ultimately, however, the actors are at the mercy of Thompson’s plot, which requires Jack to redeem himself in mechanical, tiresome fashion. The film’s title gets explained in a lengthy character-defining monologue, which then receives an obligatory cutesy echo in the final scene. A threat that leads to a lapse in courage during act two gets duly repeated in act three, so that Jack can do the right thing this time, at great personal cost.

When Jack eventually learns the value of being less selfish, it’s a tribute to Thompson’s humane sensitivity to character detail that its concluding jolt of affirmation feels fully, inspirationally earned.

All is quiet in this small town in the Hudson Valley, yet in teenager Jack’s little patch, all hell is breaking loose. Felix Thompson can lay no claim to discovering the seething, febrile realm of adolescence, unfolding out of sight and earshot of parents and police; what he does with lucid precision, however, is to show how pulse-racing, life-turning moments of crisis emerge from a local nexus of friends, enemies and potential lovers while the rest of the world carries on regardless.
