Why black and white? Because it works. It really does and no, it doesn't come across as pretentious it comes across as minimalist and beautiful yet compelling. The narrative although simple, manages to take us into a journey. Beautiful film not to be missed especially because it's black and white. I can't imagine it in colour now.
3,4 Boring? Not if you ever had a secret you let gambol in dusty corners or in thistly fields like a brisk squirrel on liberal leash breathing some freedom before being corralled by silence: impart it with the speechless, so they don't pass it on. Or if you once heard retribution crouched in a few-worded, felt-soft and leaden voice. Or felt desire fluxing and well up in choral efflorescence (choir of calls and chorus
A mature and non-ostentatious way of addressing gay sexuality, this beautifully shot film set in the tropical jungle couples sexual desire -overt and repressed- to subtle social commentary about disillusioned communities and macho culture. In this sense the deep jungle parallels the hidden drives -sexual and aggressive. Stylistically, the minimal dialogue is compensated by the meticulously attractive shots.
Quiet. Meditative. BEAUTIFULLY SHOT. And a story that is unique to its location and characters.
The interpersonal relationships developed here are very rich and quite deep. It's very low-key storytelling, but highly nuanced.
Fortunately, the black and white filming is truly beautiful, because there are long stretches of "not much going on." But the movie is quite worth the viewing.
Visually, this is a subtle and dreamy poetry, it looks stunning in b&w. A place filled with fog, calm waters, stark and so lonely - and somehow it still carries an amazing sense of tension - silence has rarely meant so much, both in the environment and the dialogues. A film about relationship, desire, fear, revenge, hatred - it's a complex film, but also seems to lack a clear direction, a beautifully lyrical fantasy.
It was like watching a Joseph Conrad seaman tale about life, death and the unjust... Absolutely beautiful cinematography that is right out of the woodcuts of it's printed illustrations. Personal isolation and mere existence is from the Socio-Realism movement... Here you can read the minds of misread beings where life is hard, wet and pent-up. Loss is profound, alienation is severe and bigotry is for bullies... Staid.
