LILIES – THEATER DER LEIDENSCHAFT

Lilies is set in a Quebec prison in 1952. Jean Bilodeau, the local bishop, is brought to the prison to hear the confession of Simon Doucet, a dying inmate. But Doucet in fact has a very different revelation for Bilodeau.

At the intersection of the Toronto New Wave and New Queer Cinema is John Greyson, who followed up his acclaimed, audacious musical Zero Patience with Lilies. Adapted from a play, this play-within-a-film (!) is both formally striking and constructed with fascinating streaks of magical realism.
