Lucy Regie Luc Besson
Lucy is a thriller with a sci-fi twist, and has Besson’s stamp of expertise: he knows how to make a thriller. He knows how to film car chases (bless his soul: I love a good car chase).

Besson has a flair for colour, as in the delightful montage answering the question what we’ve done with our billion years of life, ranging dazzlingly from a hajj in Mecca to the Rubik’s Cube. He’s also the kind of action director (Paul W.S. Anderson, of Resident Evil fame, is another) who likes to keep the action going, like a colour in his palette – the colour red, for the most part – while also speckling the canvas with ruminative moments and zany humour.

As far as Scarlett Johansson vehicles are concerned, Lucy is a veritable time machine. One of the most exciting, brilliant and insane action films in recent memory, Lucy doesn’t feel like the work of someone who has a studio on the line so much as it does the work of someone who has absolutely nothing to lose (least of all his mind). As a result, what seemed like a rather dubious proposition has — against all odds — almost single-handedly redeemed a summer of turgid blockbuster cinema.

Was sagen Andere darüber?

  • El Biffo's rating of the film Lucy

Scarlett Johannsen's third performance as something-other-than-human firmly establishes her as the Queen of Science Fiction Cinema. Expressionless? Emotionless? It's a style that surpasses the "nobody's home school of acting". I am awarding her a genuine zirconium tiara.

  • Endless Eye's rating of the film Lucy

Not a lot new going on here, although plenty of moments to enjoy, despite slogging through quite a lot of re-hashed science-fiction ideas. Amr Waked is great but not given much to do. "Lucy" wants to be everything at the same time, and simply fails to be itself.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Lucy

At times I felt like I was watching several movies spliced into one, including a "Tree of Life"-esque exploration into the origins of life; your standard Luc Besson action flick with a fetish for Hong Kong cinema; and whatever film Morgan Freeman was starring in. None of these threads ever cohere into a satisfying narrative, with Besson apparently content to deliver another dopey and underwhelming genre exercise.

  • Huey McEvoy's rating of the film Lucy

Making a genre film using superhero tropes is a brilliant idea, but the execution here is a bit too... Besson. Scarlett Johansson looks like she's having a blast, and the trippy sequences toward the end hint at what could have been an interesting film, but the B-movie shenanigans - not to mention the amateurishly gaping plot holes - consign it to the "mildly entertaining" pile.

  • Jason's rating of the film Lucy

Everything productive in our blockbusters has been leading here. Exhibit A re: what it means to conceptualize the post-human right now. Imagine if Besson had handed this material over to fellow countryman Gaspar Noé! What would seem to be a major flaw is in fact not: I am pleased that Scarlett Johansson has gone back to being, after a brief and unaccountable hiatus, delightfully godawful! Minority position. Again.

  • J. O.'s rating of the film Lucy

Without having high expectations for this, and throwing it on casually during a flight, I was pleasantly surprised - in fact, I really enjoyed it. The content is pseudo-scientific, rather, more along the lines of myth and atheist blogger wet dreams, and is riddled with holes and problems. But, there is a fast-paced, action-packed thrill ride here all the same. As a unashamed fan of Scarlet, she's nice to look at too.

  • Jye Sherwell's rating of the film Lucy

I like Scarlett Johansson, and she's good here, but the story is lacklustre. Early scenes intercutting with world and nature footage works ok, and in general I like the idea of using it to show feelings and symbolism, but the movie goes on and while it's not a bore, it's not great.

  • Jesse Furgurson's rating of the film Lucy

That's très heavy, Luc. We should all probably go to bed now cuz it's 6 in the morning and I dunno about you guys but I intend to do some actual real functional person-in-the-world shit tomorrow, but I'd be glad to talk more about this swooshy cosmic ladybrain business at breakfast, if you remember any of it.
