Mr. Freedom

Frankreich, 1969
Komödie, Sci-Fi

Darum geht's

Mr. Freedom Regie William Klein

Serge Gainsbourg, and an uncredited (and motionless) Yves Montand, to name just a few. Even those thirsty for satire be warned, Klein metes out mockery point-blank with a firehose. MR. FREEDOM has an unrelenting vehemence and self-loathing only an American expat could provide, and lives up to Jonathan Rosenbaum’s designation as “conceivably the most anti-American movie ever made.”

  • El Biffo's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

In a category of its own! Outrageous images, costumes and set design make this farce on American jingoism a fun watch. All-star cast includes Delphine Seyrig, Serge Gainsbourg, Donald Pleasance, Simone Signoret, Yves Montand, Sami Frey and Philippe Noiret.

  • msmichel's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

Has the American definition of 'freedom' and practice of jingoism ever been satirized better than this '69 film from William Klein? Extremely clever and very humorous throughout the film is '60's day-glo pop expressionism at its best with wry performances and tongue in cheek political thought. Delphine Seyrig gives a strong and overtly sexual turn here. My fav here may well be the 'freedom' building elevator.

  • Michael H. CLAES's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

A voir pour Delphine SEYRIG se baladant en nuisette la moitié du temps. KLEIN est aussi visionnaire que bricoltout. ==== To watch for Delphine SEYRIG, wandering in nightie most of the time. KLEIN is as visionary than Do It Yourself. ==== Fun casting: Philippe Noiret, Donald Pleasence, J-Cl Drouot, Serge Gainsbourg, Rufus, Catherine Rouvel, Sami Frey, D. Cohn-Bendit etc.

"Klein's over-the-top fantasy-satire is conceivably the most anti-American movie ever made, but only an American (albeit an expatriate...) could've made it. Done in a Punch & Judy manner that occasionally suggests Godard or Kubrick, and combining guerrilla-style documentary w/ expressionism, this feisty political cartoon remains a singular expression of 60s irreverence."-Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader 3.5 stars

  • MATTEO BITTANTI's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

A true masterpiece. The American Embassy-as-supermarket is pure genius. The brainwashing sequence about the American Dream prefigures Sekula's The Parallax View by a decade. America's deliberate infantilization of culture is as fresh as ever in the age of Trump. A realistic depiction of US imperialism, Mr. Freedom is the only superhero movie you'll ever need to watch. The Frankfurt School would likely approve. Not.

  • Karthik's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

Rosenbaum called it the most anti-American movie made by an American & while the nastiness of the satire built out of a universe of intimately observed clichés, can’t be gainsaid, I like to think that only a true patriot, keeping in mind an ideal vision of America, & resisting its easy identification with the Executive, could have made this amateurish & preposterous pasticciaccio, that makes Strangelove seem priggish

Usually hate things that try to hit you over head with a "message"; but this way too silly, fun, ridiculous, and absurd to not laugh at the whole goddamn thing. It's like if The Mighty Boosh decided to do a political satire.

  • Kilgore Trout's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

As a pinko with a penchant for all things late 60's, this would seem to be right up my alley and was recommended to me on that basis. But somehow the execution ruins even the best, funniest-in-theory conceits (China represented by a giant red paper mache dragon, a shopping mall as government headquarters) and the political commentary is too one-note and superficial, so nearly everything falls disappointingly flat.
