Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You

USA, 2016

Darum geht's

Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You is the definitive chronicle of Mr. Lear’s life, work, and achievements, but it is so much more than an arm’s-length, past-tense biopic; at 93, Mr. Lear is as vital and engaged as he ever was.

Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You Regie Heidi Ewing, Rachel Grady
While the film works as a primer for viewers who are curious about Lear but don’t know the details of his life and work, it’s more interesting as a movie about age and memory. Lear was 92 when the film was shot during a book tour last year, and while he’s as mentally and physically active as a person could hope to be at his age, the movie is suffused with melancholy, much of it stemming from Lear’s realization that most of his life is behind him.

Ewing and Grady make excellent use of archival interviews and footage, most notably a bit in which O’Connor explains Archie as a man with “burdens that have poisoned his life.” It’s a stunning, even stomach-churning moment, especially in conjunction with the previously stated trepidation by critics that audiences were embracing the character of a lovable bigot.

Directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady (Jesus Camp) don’t shy away from Lear’s behind-the-scenes battles with stars Carroll O’Connor, John Amos, and Esther Rolle, but the documentary leans more toward hagiography than gossip. If it feels a little crammed—well, we should all live such a full life.
