Nail-biting thriller about a brutally kidnapped rich industrialist – a powerful role by Yvan Attal. While he physically and mentally degenerates in imprisonment, the kidnappers, police and the board of the company of which he is director negotiate about the ransom of €50 million.

Loosely based on the kidnapping of the French industrialist Baron Empain in 1978, RAPT was a nominee in the 2009 César awards' best film category. I was slightly disappointed by Lucas Belvaux's last movie but I was maybe expecting too much after Trilogy, Belvaux's indisputable masterpiece. Recommended though because of its cold as ice mood.
Brilliant in places but ultimately a letdown. The film really gathers steam after Attal's character gets released but despite its running time the movie remains at surface level at all times. Melville's influence is obvious but most of the performances are pretty wooden. An uneven affair at best...
Satisfying crime thriller that focused on a few key characterizations relating to the protagonist's fall from grace. Thankfully didn't rely on an obtrusive score; taking a lighter (and more effective) hand musically.
Bad habits prove to be the apparent undoing of corporate chairman Stanislav Graff. A taught waiting game of tense reciprocity as the experienced captors negotiate with police for the ransom demand. Even government ministers are drawn into the brewing scandal. Then, inextricably, following two months of captivity the kidnappers release their prisoner. So, what is really going on in this well-crafted mystery?
What are you worth…? What does the world think you are worth….? but the biggest questions are what do your kidnappers think you are worth….? and How much will the outside world pay to get you back….? Rapt is not an action film that will see police freeing a hostage after some bloodied violence… it is more cerebral and social in its core…
Well acted, elegantly told story about a kidnapping of a member of the French elite and the complications his personal life brings to its resolution. Unfolding in unpredictable turns, calling to question and exposing the various victim's values along the way.
