Darum geht's

Satansbraten Regie Rainer Werner Fassbinder

Kritiker-Rezensionen

For viewers unfamiliar with the work of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, SATAN’S BREW probably isn’t the best place to start. The characters are grotesques, the dialogue obscene, and the mise-en-scene grimy. Indeed the film feels even more brackish and punk than the writer-director’s flippantly affectless early features (e.g., LOVE IS COLDER THAN DEATH, KATZELMACHER, THE AMERICAN SOLDIER), with something to offend pretty much everyone.

Was sagen Andere darüber?

  • Nicole Richie's rating of the film Satansbraten

the protagonist is unbearable; it puts you to test 'cause you have to listen to him yell throughout the whole thing.

  • Checkpoint Charlie's rating of the film Satansbraten

I've seen a few people refer to this as Fassbinder's worst film, but honestly I think it's pretty intelligent and though not in the traditional form of a "funny-ha-ha" comedy it has its own brand of black humor within Kranz's many trails to ultimate creative identity.

  • Diderot's rating of the film Satansbraten

One of Fassbinder's most underrated films, and a real masterpiece. It contains all the major themes of his more-lauded melodramas but addresses them with an explicitly morbid wit that is actually always subliminally present throughout Fassbinder's career, even at his most melancholy. Few people understand the terror of existence quite like him (which, I suspect, is why Béla Tarr is a fan and his most important heir).

  • johmus's rating of the film Satansbraten

A film bursting with Fassbinder's joie de spectacle humain. Presentation of something inevitably egoistic in the human soul that at the same time becomes pure fun. It's an energetic comedy about the struggles of asserting oneself in this life while being capable to completely neglect everyone else close to you. It's the story where the result is more important than the journey while it should be vice versa.

  • Matthew Jenner's rating of the film Satansbraten

I wondered why this film was called "Satan's Brew" - now I realize that it was a literal title. Oh Rainer, how did this happen? How do you go from making the extraordinary "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul", a terrific social drama, to this steaming pile of over-acted, self-indulgent, grotesque debauchery? Frequently confusing and consistently nauseating, it tries to be profound but results in an utter mess. Despicable

  • Adam Whybray's rating of the film Satansbraten

"Yesterday when I was mad/ And quite prepared to give up everything/ Admitting, I don't believe/ In anyone's sincerity/ And that's what's really got to me" (Pet Shop Boys, 'Yesterday When I Was Mad') "My life’s a drama I can’t deny/ I want to have sex with flies/ But when I try I am too big/ I stick it in and they don’t live" (The Tiger Lillies, 'Flies')

  • FISCHER's rating of the film Satansbraten

  • alcools's rating of the film Satansbraten

Brillant. Fassbinder mokiert sich in so grotesker Weise über den rücksichtslosen 'Künstlertypen'. Ein Hoch auf Fassbinder. Was wäre der deutsche Film ohne ihn?
