A film about the basic need for human connection and love. The title refers not only to a doctor’s inadequate yet poetic description of what it’s like to be in a coma, but also to the psychological state one can enter when dealing with trauma.

January 4, 2019 • 2.5 Stars ◊◊◊◊ This would have been a more interesting story had it been about how the main character (Katherine Waterston) copes with her mother’s (Mary Kay Place) illness and finding support in the stranger (Michael Shannon) she has just met. ◊◊◊◊ The message we should all get from this is - that we shouldn’t allow any grief in our past to bury us because then we miss all the joys in our present.
1.5 Why was this film made? The script is full of tired cliches, from "Mysterious/Dangerous Night Club" to "Freudian Mother Problems", which it tries to pass off as a psychological thriller. Unfortunately the wigs and the actors are also subpar, and thus the film is DOA. Michael Shannon, in a supporting role, is the one bright spot. Apparently the end should be satisfying as the single woman now has a man again.
