Tom Hiel's score is essential whether you bother watching this or not. Spacey begging for death foreshadows a scene released a year later in Se7en. For variations on a theme watch Spacey in American Beauty.
Following Altman's The Player, Swimming With Sharks presents another biting swipe at the inner workings of Hollywood. Penned by former insider George Huang, the result is a darkly comic thriller, intelligently structured with plenty of quotable moments. If anything it's perhaps a little over-written but it's wicked entertainment and Spacey may never have been better.
Two starts for Spacey. 1 for Del Toro. I've always been a fan of the film and re-watching it was a pleasant surprise. It's a $700,000 movie shot in 18 days and it shows. Huang is not much of a director but he did get the script and cast right, which is 90% of it. A must see for anyone working in the entertainment industry.
