Other than the change in setting and time period, very faithful adaptation of Chandler with all the procedural beats intact. Mitchum, despite his age, cuts to the heart of Marlowe's stubbornness and sarcasm. Made-for-TV feel hampers what could otherwise be a player in 'best Marlowe adaptation' contentions.
I had hope this version might clarify the confusing plot points in Howard Hawk's version but changing the setting just adds another quizzical element as does the 70's nudity in lurid color since it doesn't really add anything new to the pornography-infused plotline. Perhaps they just wanted Oliver Reed as Eddie Mars! He excels as does Mitchum who is probably the only one I could buy as Marlowe.
