Bundesrepublik Deutschland, 1972
Drama, LGBT+

Darum geht's

Petra von Kant is a successful fashion designer—arrogant, caustic, and self-satisfied. She’s in a fairly satisfactory S&M relationship with her assistant Marlene. When she develops an obsession with fashion model Karin, things become far more complicated in this tale of intermingled love and hate.

Die bitteren Tränen der Petra von Kant Regie Rainer Werner Fassbinder
The film drops the curtain of artifice as characters bare their souls and voice their most primitive emotional needs. Fassbinder elicits more naturalistic performances during these scenes and shoots some of them in close-up. It feels as though the director has broken through his style to achieve something universal and direct.
