The Bling Ring Regie Sofia Coppola
The nearly feral protagonists dive over the barrier separating mere mortals from the fame they believe that they deserve. A life spent keeping tabs on human beings as if they were characters in an epic poem has reduced them to human simulacra. They live to pose themselves in the clothes of people whose exploits have beguiled them… Coppola poses the kids as if they were subjects of a forgotten master’s oil study, a story of heroes of ancient picaresques.

It’s all rather perverse, in addition to being vapid and aesthetically null. It’s all fitting, I suppose, for the subject matter. But then, this begs the question of why anyone felt the need to memorialize this historical footnote to the E! Channel daily log, to deliver this half-assed paean to a demimonde that’s much more debased than based.

With The Bling Ring, the writer-director performs a quiet self-excoriation by aligning herself with a risible breed of entitlement without giving up her film’s visual allure, jettisoning the male paradigm that’s often powered her narratives, often attributed to her relationship with her father.

Was sagen Andere darüber?

  • Eduardo's rating of the film The Bling Ring

A friend told me he liked this movie because it made him feel dirty. I thought the same thing, because I wanted those kids to Winona Ryder the shit out of those celebrities. I loved the voyeuristic aspect of this film, and I felt complicit with the characters. The way Sofia Coppola used music and images in this film created hypnotic and alluring passages that really showed the seductive qualities of LA.

  • T. J. Mesen's rating of the film The Bling Ring

To me, this felt closer to the world of A Clockwork Orange–the free will of a group of narcissistic teens seeking something 'extra'–than to Korine and Bay. Of course, the horror is that this (unlike the droogs' world) takes place in our time, and although the condemnation is mild, by the end I feel it does pose a valid question: Who is more amoral, these kids stealing or the people/system they are stealing from?

The two thoughts that collide in my head: Such vapid, superficial, horrible kids. I love that jacket, though, I wonder how much it costs.

  • Matt Burgess's rating of the film The Bling Ring

Coppola's strongest work, strange, funny, creepy, sad, full of long, repetitive scenes of dead characters struggling to feel alive and feel important. A mix of reality TV mood pieces ala The Hills and 70s horror films ala Stepford Wives. None of the characters appear to connect or have conversations, all on their phones or in their private worlds, 'together' yet totally alone.

  • Zachary T.'s rating of the film The Bling Ring

I find the comparisons to "Spring Breakers" a little inappropriate. While Korine's film was a hyperbolic and indulgent nightmare vision, Coppola's film is a cold, distant and eerie docudrama, too real to be satire and too aware of its hollow characters to be anything else. The stark, composed beauty fits the material perfectly, on a thematic level. We're in awe of the exterior and shudder at the emptiness behind it.

  • Richmond Hill's rating of the film The Bling Ring

A missed opportunity with satirical targets unchecked (at best lazily sighted). It lacks bite and is misjudged - akin to throwing golf balls at a dartboard and hoping they’ll stick. The sneering, snarling vapidity of the past twenty years of so-called celebrity culture should be the easiest of open seasons, but this falls well short of the joyful cattiness of Clueless and instead stalls in a bored stasis.

  • smndvdcl's rating of the film The Bling Ring

While based on real events, the characterisation seems acutely influenced by 'To Die For', with echoes of 'Catfish' in theme. It's a zeitgeist film about our idolatry of celebrity, the cult of VIP and subverting the American Dream through the naive 'online' idealism of youth that descends into delinquency. Not as groundbreaking as some of Coppola's other films, but certainly stylish and with a clear message.

(spoiler) This works. Sofia does not try, it seems to me, to overexplain or contextualize social phenomena. She follows the lives of teenagers in a society that produces lives like this. Idolizing a certain lifestyle. There are some virtues in what is shown here. You can become a star, even if just for 15 minutes, by going to prison. If you get on the news. The film does show that. Reality turned into Reality show.
