The Driver

Walter Hill USA, 1978

Nicholas Gregory's rating of the film Driver

Drive mashed this and Le Samouraï for a stylish, neon-80's arthouse aesthetic that's more alluring and entrancing than Hill's typical grittiness. Driver's screenplay is, however, much more clever as it's more classically written than Refn's characterization during silence. Hill's car stunts are tenser and cooler, too. But, Drive is a slightly-more engaging watch due to Refn's aesthetically-pleasing, poetry-in-motion.
