The performances, the writing, the direction, Segel’s D.F.W. impression, everything is just fine. But The End of the Tour is disgraceful. It feels like it’s towing out the real Wallace’s ghost to perform some soppy parody of himself.

As shaped by screenwriter Donald Margulies, the conversation itself isn’t terribly interesting, especially compared to the profound variations on this mental tug-of-war that animate Wallace’s writing. Eisenberg, who’s never afraid of looking unlikable, makes Lipsky something of a brown-nosing opportunist, fueled by professional envy. But he never succeeds in creating a character who feels like Wallace’s equal in terms of dramatic stature.

It’s a well-made film, with admirable acting, nicely detailed regional touches, and tense moments that are deftly handled from a cinematic perspective. It is also a movie of ideas, as Steve Zeitchik noted in the L.A. Times. It raises for consideration some (if not all) of the central concerns of David Foster Wallace’s writing: existential loneliness, the threats of increasingly immersive technologies, and the risks of constant entertainment, rampant consumerism, and celebrity culture.
