That’s the wondrous, moving twist at the heart of The Great Gatsby: that Gatsby – this mystery man with the ice-cream suit and beguiling smile, this glamorous figure, this rich power-broker who makes a traffic cop go away just by flashing his business card – is driven by nothing more (or less) than the love of a woman… This, in my opinion, is Luhrmann’s best film yet (though I wasn’t wild about the others), and the only one that made me tear up occasionally.

One of this Gatsby’s delights is the way it finds cinematic gestures befitting the book’s mythologised Greater New York geography… Resurrected through CG, nothing in this lost city is remotely plausible – but the weightlessness of pixel-based art is a boon here, for Fitzgerald’s idea of the period as a sort of mass-hallucination fits the way the actors swim through ethereal environments…

The Great Gatsby" is anything but great movie, but it may still have been the greatest opening attraction Cannes ever had, if only for the sake of serving as the festival’s perfect mirror image. The story of excessive dreaming (as well as of dreamy excess) seems to be arriving in a magical aura all its own: the money is up there on the screen, along with partying, boozing and general overreaching (by characters and the filmmaker alike).

Was sagen Andere darüber?

  • Lights in the Dusk's rating of the film Der große Gatsby

The spectre of lost love, decadence of presentation, meta-filmic framing device& anachronistic soundtrack each recall, self-consciously, the influence of Moulin Rouge. There are moments of spectacle here that are as wonderful as that earlier film& sequences of visual poetry that are incredible. Unfortunately main characters are poorly developed& the film becomes inert when required to engage in traditional narrative.

  • HenriqueA's rating of the film Der große Gatsby

I gotta hand it to Luhrmann. It is a disaster you cannot avert your eyes from. Though ridiculous and and very badly acted, written, directed and edited, it still had it's winning moments. The only thing that cannot be excused is how awful Tobey Maguire is nowdays (or maybe he's been this terrible forever and I've never noticed it before).

  • smndvdcl's rating of the film Der große Gatsby

An unfairly castigated adaptation - maybe the Redford/Farrow version is so ingrained, it is hard to accept new artistic license and subjective interpretation. I thought this was one film where high production values were justified. The fusion of Jazz Age and Contemporary eclecticism worked wonders, and the story, cinematography, set design, performances and narrative execution were spot on. Luhrmann is back on form.

  • mjgildea's rating of the film Der große Gatsby

Better than I expected but then again I didn't expect much. The style was way too saccharine and flashy for my tastes (but that's Baz Luhrmann for you) and I wasn't into how Gatsby turned into a bitch for the final third. DiCaprio was great and that Jordan Baker was right up my goddamned alley. Beyond that this version of The Great Gatsby was just some empty eye candy.

  • Tigrão's rating of the film Der große Gatsby

Was expecting to hate it, but I ended up really enjoying this ridicuslously over-the-top vision of the 1920s. It's great fun to watch and the production value of this movie is fabulous. I'm usually a fan of subtleties, but Baz Luhrmann is such a nutcase behind the camera that it's hard not to enjoy.

  • Ingrid Bergman's rating of the film Der große Gatsby

Baz Luhrmann's much anticipated adaptation of "The Great Gatsby" certainly exceeded my expectations. I was expecting style to triumph over substance and was happily surprised to find real substance in addition to the resplendent glamorized style. The symbolism of Fitzgerald's novel has been faithfully captured here and the real meaning is readily apparent.

  • Pierluigi Puccini's rating of the film Der große Gatsby

I cannot relate to certain story, theme or motif when it is unashamedly placed below stylization. Even with Leonardo DiCaprio's effort in his characterization, the anachronistic musical choices, onanistic visuals and overall camp attitude turns unintentionally amusing, and serves only to detract and damage the core of the piece.

  • Marcus Killerby's rating of the film Der große Gatsby

It commits almost every possible sin a movie can. It has an abhorrent soundtrack, the make-up department was clearly influenced by the oompa loompas when applying foundation to Toby Maguire, several scenes were structured purely for 3D purposes and don't work at all in 2D, it misquotes really important lines (particularly the opening) until they are unrecognisable but is utterly faithful to many throw-away lines...
