Octavia Spencer is so good and refined in her performance in "Ma" that she effectively asserts a lurking presence over the film itself — one that you can feel grip the characters and mood tighter than a vise as the story progresses. It, too, helps there's such a commitment to slowburning dread that allows the various teens to form identities, plus a deliciously squirmy third act. Does what a genre film should do.
Octavia Spencer gives an intensely creepy performance in this layered horror film that feels like a throwback from the 80s but with a very modern spin and some thought provoking questions about the state of the world. A true thrill ride that will keep you on the edge of your seats the whole way through.
2.7 stars. What a hot mess! Personally, I think those saying that Butler is embodying the 'mammy' archetype here are just caught on their memories of 'The Help'. Any racial politics here are incoherent. If you can, just enjoy a bullied woman take her gleeful revenge upon those who wronged her. Sure, maybe her revenge goes too far, but it's hard not to root for Ma and there are confused laughs to be had along the way!
