Plotted like a Swiss watch, acted British as you please (read as: very dry and very very well) and what to say of the impeccable visuals... they sort of reminded me of an alternate universe Wes Anderson (in their meticulous "Everything in it's Right Place" ness), except replace all the colors with browns, beiges and Soviet grays, and replace all the whimsy with stultifying dread.
Attori bravissimi danno vita a personaggi molto belli.
And this is why ladies and gents, why I love Gary Oldman. Really loved the movie, the cast was incredible, so many great british actors, both old a new that is just breath taking. Really need to read the book to grasp all the details from the script, but besides the fact, a great movie.
I found it gripping, relished the slow building of paranoid, oppressive and mysterious atmosphere, and it also highlights the dark side of the British private school system, gateway to elite clubs. With such shady characters, tense rivalries and violence, neither side of the cold war comes out with credit. Oldman and the cast as a whole are excellent, the settings and sense of the time very effectively handled.
Slims the story down but doesn't lose an ounce of nuance. It seems almost willfully oblique, with its leisurely pace and light touch with the revelations, but it's refreshing and smart. It's also gorgeous in every possible way, down to the sound mixing; dialogue is right up front and everything else behind it. I'd have to watch it again to get the twists of the plot, honestly...but I'd want to.
The cutest headshot ever? A few inches under Firth's eye bag? How cute was that? Liked the way Lacon butters his toast, the way George swims on that lake and the sentence "Female is the Future". Mark Strong was so cool and Oldman was great great.
