Shot against an exquisitely mundane world of colors, Almodovar's film continues the exploration of women's milieux, tackling generational 'debts' around the mother-daughter relationship. His film style and mise-en-scène have grown more academic yet also more effective in character development. If the female cast led by Cruz delivers ample rewards, the film as a whole tends to procrastinate in scenes and dialogues.
Apart from Bergman - in a different situation - can there be a Director with such certainty and sure-handedness in crafting something of conviction from the most unlikely elements? Volver is however rather low on energy in the intertwining plot-craft expected in latter Almodóvar webbing a simple, occasionally affecting, lattice of maternally familial nonsenses but little more. The playing however is effective.
Another perfect Almodovar experience. The story was truly moving and several moments nearly brought me to tears. The colors popped and the characters were so fleshed out and incredible I almost felt I knew them personally. A beautiful experience from a genius filmmaker.
Watching Almodóvar is always a nice experience. The photography is top-notch. It is so beautiful and colorful, and still manages to fit within that world. The performances are brilliant. However, Penélope takes the prize; she is so detailed and moving, and her homage to old film stars is amazing (Cruz was told to channel Sophoia Loren). The whole story is perfect. It may be my all-time favorite Almodóvar film.
Wow!wow!Wow!Please make a film in the states. To see you touch another language they way you touch spanish. To die for, this man proves time and time again that he is one of the greats. Only Welles could stretch a story the way this man does. I cannot say enough great things about his work, which is beyond top notch and always running in sync. A another film to watch with mom.
Convinced once again after a second viewing after 10 years tht this film is overrated. Preformance of the ensemble cast apart, the film's screenplay is disgusting and did not deserve the prize it received at Cannes for it. Why have an overhead shot of Cruz' cleavage when she is cooking? Why make a film where murderers are interpreted as good people because they were raped or almost raped? Why make films on incest?
