Synopsis

Gérard Arpel lives with his parents in a hilariously ultramodern house, but prefers the company of his uncle Hulot, who takes him on trips to the old city. Meanwhile, Gérard’s parents attempt to adjust Mr Hulot to modern life—so they find him a job in Mr Arpel’s antiseptic plastic hose factory.

Our take

Winner of an Oscar®, Jacques Tati’s first film in color pits his famous Monsieur Hulot against the tyranny of the mid-century modern home. In turning stylish but impractical gadgets into visual gags, Mon oncle hilariously skewers the consumerist culture that followed France’s postwar economic boom.
