Synopsis

The experimental multidisciplinary artist Tony Conrad is shown in his studio with his costumes and wigs, cooking pickled films or playing violin. He reminisces playfully about the 1960s New York underground scene, specifically his encounter with Jack Smith and his involvement with Flaming Creatures.

Our take

Shot on fuzzy 16mm stock, Marie Losier’s imaginative documentary portrait of composer and filmmaker Tony Conrad lovingly matches the idiosyncratic genius of its subject. From his charmingly chaotic home, a veritable cabinet of curiosities, the avant-garde icon weaves magic out of the everyday.
