Synopsis

Alfonso, an aging farmer, returns to his family home in rural Colombia to care for his son, whose work in the toxic sugarcane fields has left him gravely ill. As ash rains from the burning crops, the family struggles to survive—torn between love, labor, and a land that is slowly destroying them.

Our take

Winner of the Camera d’Or at Cannes, this poignant, atmospheric drama is set amid Colombia’s sugarcane agriculture: looking at its plantations, farmers, and working conditions. A deceptively simple but visually striking tale about a difficult return, played mostly by nonprofessional actors.
