Synopsis

Charlie lives in a remote Aboriginal community in northern Australia, where government intervention has left many of the residents feeling powerless. When his gun and hand-crafted spear are confiscated, leaving him nothing to hunt with, Charlie heads into the bush to live the old way.

Our take

Rolf de Heer has had an eclectic, unsung career as a director of sharp thrillers and small character pieces alike. A terrific example of the latter is this portrait of an Australian Aboriginal—played by the great David Gulpilil—and his resistance to the unjust laws beset upon him and his community.
