Synopsis

Amodini is a rich landowner’s daughter. Unable to face social stigma, her father arranges her marriage to a much older person, who fails to turn up on the wedding day. To save the situation, she is forced to marry a 15-year-old boy.

Our take

A fable-like tale of casteism in 18th century Bengal, Amodini spotlights the practice of marrying women to any high-caste Brahmin males available—even infants—to “save” them from the sins of being a spinster. Madhu Ambat’s striking visual compositions deftly bring this period drama to life.
