Synopsis

Undercover journalist Marianne moves to northern France to research her new book on job insecurity. Without revealing her identity, she gets hired as a cleaner on a ferry. There she experiences financial instability and social invisibility, but also discovers solidarity with her women colleagues.

Our take

Adapted from reporter Florence Aubenas’s bestselling book, this scathing indictment of France’s gig economy won San Sebastián’s Best European Film award. With Juliette Binoche leading a superb ensemble, Between Two Worlds is an empathetic examination of precarious labour and journalistic ethics.
