Synopsis

In 1872, Antonina, a devoted admirer of composer Tchaikovsky, pursues him obsessively and proposes marriage. Though he is largely absent, he remains a haunting presence in her life, fueling a one-sided love that spirals into isolation and emotional torment.

Our take

Chronicling the wretched union between a composer and his oblivious spouse, this captivating biographical drama couples devotion with feverish delusion. Infecting the pallor of his period piece with vulgar red and festering green, Kirill Serebrennikov makes emotional and societal ugliness visceral.
