Synopsis

A middle-aged man dies in the street, leaving his widow, two sons and a daughter destitute. The devastated family is confronted not only with his loss but with a terrible challenge – how to survive. For they are cannibals.

Our take

Not since George A. Romero’s Land of the Dead has the horror genre been so metaphorically mined for signifiers of social iniquity and underclass revolt. Yet in place of satire and postmodern subversion, We Are What We Are plays its horrors straight, and finds plenty of meat on its allegorical bones.
