Looking at the rise, reign and demise of the Führer, Hitler: A Film from Germany doesn’t try to recreate history to the letter. Instead, it places its actors — many of whom play several roles — on a stage and has them reenact events based on and inspired by the German dictator’s life.
The last segment in Syberberg’s German Trilogy ruminates on good vs. evil while filming a group of actors as they reenact events from his country’s past. With a soundstage serving as the main setting for each vignette, the film uses music, puppetry and archival recordings to spellbinding effect.
