Here at MUBI we adore the work of the found-footage maverick Peter Tscherkassky: so much so that we asked him, in 2019, to dream up an interpretation of our logo to show before some of our films. In typical Tscherkassky style, it arrived in a whirr of flickering film strips and the industrial sounds of trains and projection—a feat created by using clips of the Lumiére brothers’ work. This year, we’re immensely pleased to be hosting the latest film from the Austrian master of the avant-garde on the platform. In a nod to the fellow Austrian avant-garde filmmaker Kurt Kren,  Train Again mounts a frenetic, flash-framed tribute to early cinema’s love affair with trains.
To celebrate Train Again, we’re bringing together a series of Tscherkassky’s analogue experiments in the darkroom. A major figure in contemporary found-footage filmmaking, the filmmaker is both devoted to the sensory and tactile potential of celluloid, and committed to unveiling its artifice. Manually reworking pre-existing film—an arduous analog process— Tscherkassky draws out oneiric imagery from the scraps and glitches of film history. Inviting us to reflect on how we consume cinematic images of all sorts—from horror films to westerns to pornographic films—Tscherkassky’s films aim to deconstruct cinema’s many motifs and narrative norms. Dive into Tscherkassky’s exquisite corpus of films, for a cinema that is both alluringly cerebral and thrillingly visceral.
