Beautiful, interesting, incredible cinema.
After her lover’s fatal overdose, Yolanda, a bolero singer and drug addict, seeks refuge in the Convent of Humble Redeemers, dedicated to the rescue of women with a history of drug use, sex work, or murder. However, as the convent turns out to house many vices and sins, no redemption is in sight.
Pedro Almodóvar’s punk sensibilities showed little sign of abating with his third feature. Dipping his toe into the melodramatic waters he’d later make his own, this irreverent satire was written as a vehicle for Cristina Sánchez Pascual, but it’s Carmen Maura who gets accessorised with a pet tiger.
