Any story like “9 1/2 Weeks” risks becoming very ridiculous. The actors are taking a chance in appearing in it. Plots like this make audiences nervous, and if the movie doesn’t walk a fine line between the plausible and the bizarre, it will only find the absurd. A lot of the success of “9 1/2 Weeks” is because Rourke and Basinger make the characters and their relationship convincing.

Mr. Rourke and Miss Basinger move through the movie like robots, whispering much of the time and looking scared, as if they were exploring a haunted house, not knowing what lunatic thing is going to happen next. It's not easy to act under these conditions.

Mickey Rourke is less than totally convincing as a big businessman, but Kim Basinger is the film’s one saving grace, as she manages to retain a certain dignity.
