The last moments of the film give us reason to believe that Esti and Ronit will be able to maintain a relationship, if an unconventional one in which Esti remains living with Dovid as they raise a child together. And although this reunion might be implausibly romantic, Disobedience, in focusing on the characters’ shared humanity, makes an important point about the need to accommodate difference.

Lelio’s interpretation of [Naomi Alderman's source novel] is a light-handed drama with hazy stakes and only flashes of the enigmatic tension he so fully realized with actress Daniela Vega in [A Fantastic Woman]... As a whole, the film is directionless, with few individual character-study scenes making it compelling enough.

All three principal actors – Weisz, McAdams, and Nivola – give effectively constrained performances. They work as a team here, consistent with the delicate balance in their characters’ complicated relationships with one another.

[Disobedience] cuts deeper than your standard forbidden-love story, largely because the actors are so attuned to their characters’ anguish.

[Lelio] is dealing with risky and potentially offensive dramatic material here, and “Disobedience” comes across as a challenging but also deeply respectful and thoughtful meditation on traditions and mores that date back thousands of years.

Taking its cues from the religious severity of the community in which it’s set — and the London weather — Lelio’s latest film is austere, deliberate and rather chilly. What warmth there is — and it is considerable — radiates from its three lead performers and a script... that treats each of the central characters as neither hero nor villain.

"Disobedience" could have gone even further in the direction of "Stella Dallas"-melodrama torment. Some of it comes across as curiously low-stakes, considering the circumstances. But, in a way, that's refreshing too.

[Disobedience] lacks the absorbing emotional pull of the filmmaker’s best but packs a rare kind of generosity in its attentiveness to complex customs, navigated without judgment.

[Lelio's] style is restrained but potent, which helps the impact of the actors’ performances as well as the picture’s fairly graphic love scene. The possibilities for these characters are more varied than it initially seems, and “Disobedience” thoughtfully considers them all.

A gorgeously acted, written and directed spellbinder... You can discover a lot about yourself by getting lost in such a transcendent ode to passion. Surrender to it.
