Letty, a frail young woman from Virginia, moves to Sweetwater, Texas to live with her cousin Beverly, but his wife Cora thinks that Letty has plans on Beverly and orders Letty out of the house. Left to fend for herself, Letty is forced to accept a marriage proposal from Lige, whom she doesn’t love.
